Upon review of the Association of New Brunswick Licensed Practical Nurse, (ANBLPN) Graduate

Practical Nurse (GPN) and the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) professional practices

competencies required of a Graduate Nurse (GN), we have realised the numerous similarities in our

professional responsibilities.

Also in review, we noted a GN-1A wage of $26.54 per hour (as of Jan 01/07) and that of a GPN-A is

$17.82 per hour (as of Jan 01/07).

It is our belief that although the GN-1A hold a certificate from CNA and a GPN-A hold a certificate

from ANBLPN they are in fact similar in qualifications and professional responsibilities therefore, the

GPN –A should in fact be at wage parity with the GN-1A.

In regard to these important facts, and in consideration that previous required upgrades have not been

compensated in any way, I.e.; “Medication Administration Course”, and in view of the Mandatory

requirement for licensure of the “Adult Physical Assessment”, we strongly suggest that our

Association begin to work on the necessary legislative changes to meet the goal of not only equal

qualification, but equal wages as well.

Furthermore, we feel this is not a union or contractual issue, but rather our Association’s obligation to

its members, and in not doing so, the Association is neglectful in representing our best interests.

We feel that once again, on completion of the “Adult Physical Assessment Program”, we will not be

compensated for further education. This Association should be held accountable, as this trend of

increased requirements without recognition must stop.

As an Association of over 3000 (active and inactive) professionals, we have a very powerful voice and

should no longer be silent. We implore you, Mr. Symes, to stand behind us in this fight for our rights

to equality, and expect you to support us in this battle. Through similar individual efforts, we will

begin to lobby those government officials in our ridings.

Sincerely,

Mary Jane Anderson
